Terrasanta College Amman
When the Arab-Israeli war broke out in 1948, one of its most prominent repercussions was the influx of huge numbers of Palestinians to Jordan and the deterioration of the security situation there, so studies at Terrasanta Jerusalem were suspended.
At that time, the eyes of the Franciscan fathers turned towards Jordan - where Amman was a promising young capital that began to grow and flourish quickly and steadily, promising a bright future. As a result, the Franciscans decided to move to Jordan, so they packed their bags towards the capital Amman and began establishing Terrasanta College in the same year, keen on the future of their students so that they would not lose an academic year. So they rented a building for them in Jabal Amman "which was owned by Mr. Tawfiq Marar: and is now occupied by the Indian Embassy", continuing their educational and humanitarian journey in Jordan at the beginning of the 48/49 academic year, but that year it was limited to secondary school students only due to the nature of the circumstances and the lack of time.
During the same year, the Franciscan Fathers began searching for land to purchase and build the college on, until they chose the current location in Jabal Al-Lweibdeh to be its permanent location. The land was purchased and the necessary building plans were immediately prepared, where the then General Superior of the Custody of the Holy Land (Patriarch) Patriarch (later) Petroguri, with the assistance of Father Nehme Al-Semaan, played the most prominent role in choosing the location and building the current college on it.
At the beginning of the 49/50 academic year, the new building was nearing completion, so it was decided to move the college and its students to the new building, where primary and secondary school students were accepted, even though the building had not been completely completed, as its windows were without glass and water, electricity, communications and even paved roads had not yet been provided... Nevertheless, the academic year was opened at the college, out of the Franciscan Fathers' concern for the students' interests and to confirm their insistence on continuing their noble mission in this field.
It is worth mentioning that Mr. Roux Al-Azizi was one of the first to sign employment contracts as teachers at the college, where he was an Arabic language teacher. The late Professor Jamil Boutros was a history teacher in addition to his work as an advisor and assistant to the college director in Amman for twenty years.
Father Gabriel Akiki was chosen to be the first director of Terra Santa College - Amman, but he declined to assume this responsibility, so a collective administration was formed for it from the following names:
Father Peter Eichelberger (patriarch) as president of the college and teacher of mathematics and physics.
Brother Anthony Bruya as director of the college.
Brother Kenneth Campbell as assistant director and teacher of English.
Thus, Terra Santa College in Amman became a natural extension of the mother college in Jerusalem and formed a strong tributary to the enlightenment movement in this noble Jordanian homeland and a strong link that strengthens the bonds and ties of love and goodness between the people east and west of the river and became a fresh source of knowledge and science in Jordan and one of the most prominent educational and scientific institutions of the country.
